  • Warkworth is at the head of the Mahurangi Harbour, about 45 minutes’ drive north of Auckland –gateway to a coastline of bays and islands, and to coastal resorts such as Matakana.

    The Mahurangi River reaches the sea south of a peninsula with many bays, protected by Kawau Island, bounded to the north by the Tawharanui Peninsula, a regional park. North of Tawharanui are beaches and a marine reserve and observatory.

    The region has boomed in popularity in recent years, with improved road access to Auckland, especially with lifestyle businesses, such as farming, wine-making, art and antiques. Warkworth has a long history with shipbuilding, timber and flour-milling that can be seen at local museums and centres.

    Warkworth is charming for its history, which can be appreciated by visiting the museum and antique shops, or through a river cruise on a historic vessel. There are many art and craft shops, as well as restaurants and cafes that display a regional passion for fresh food. Saturday markets are a great opportunity to sample local produce.

    The region is blessed with two large Regional Parks that have numerous walking tracks and places to enjoy kayaking, swimming and surfing. A marine reserve to the north offers great scuba diving and snorkelling opportunities, including guided tours operated from the Goat Island research centre.

    Warkwoth region has centres for equestrian sport, archery and adventure activities such as paintball. It also boats some moderngolf courses.
