  • Turangi, on the southern shore of Lake Taupo, and is famed for its trout fishing rivers and lakes. It is also a gateway to Tongariro National Park, where bush walking and skiing can be enjoyed.

    Nearby Lake Taupo beaches are great places for family fun, picnics and barbeques. Boat hire and kayak rental allow visitors to explore the spectacular lake shore.

    5 Km west of Taupo is the romantic thermal spa village of Tokaanu, where campground parks, hotel, motel and lodge-style accommodation is available.

    Skiing near Turangi

    Mt Ruapehu is the closest mountain to Turangi and is NZ's largest ski and snowboard area.

    Driving from Turangi to Mt Ruapehu in the Tongariro National Park takes about 40 minutes.

    There are 3 skifields on the mountain - Whakapapa, Turoa & Tukino. The closest town to Whakapapa is the National Park Village, and Ohakune & Raetihi are closer to Turoa.

    Transport around Turangi

    As the town centre is by the main north-south highway, it is easy to reach by road transport, including bus.

    Turangi is 40 minutes’ drive south of Taupo airport. The nearest rail station is at Taumarunui, about 60 minutes drive west.

    Tourist Activities around Turangi

    The rivers and lake around Turangi are famous for fishing - among the best in New Zealand. Rainbow trout, and the smaller brown trout, can be caught by fly fishing or with a lure from a boat. A fishing licence is needed for the required number of days, easily purchased from a fishing, hunting or  camping store.

    Hiking and bush walking are popular, especially in the ranges and national park to the south. This vast area of sub-alpine wilderness is interesting for its geology and ecology, as well as for its history. Remnants of ancient forest contain impressive native trees, rare plants and wildlife.

    Mountain biking and quad biking (ATV) are popular activities around Turangi, using specially built trails. White water river rafting is another very popular local activity.

    West around the shore of Lake Taupo are several summer beach retreats popular for family camping and lake-based activities, such as water-skiing.
