    About Thames (Coromandel)

The main shopping location on the Coromandel, Thames has a wealth of boutiques, a historic main street and the modern Goldfields Shopping Mall.

In the late 19th century, this town was one of New Zealand's largest - built on the pioneering industries of gold and Kauri logging. Today, its colourful history is still alive in the many pubs, buildings, museums and activities found in the area.

The Kauaeranga Valley lies in the hills just behind Thames and offers extensive walking tracks and camping opportunities as well as some of the more adventurous activities that the Coromandel has to offer. The Thames Coast, a beautiful stretch of scenic coastline just north of Thames, also offers a variety of activities and accommodation and is a great place to do a spot of fishing.

The population of Thames is approximately 7,500 and is serviced by a large supermarket, air-conditioned shopping mall, many large chain stores as well as boutique shops.
