  • Nelson’s favourite beach, Tahuna, is located just a few kilometres south of the city centre. It is very popular in summer for swimming and beach activities, and for leisure pursuits such as mini-golf, tennis and roller skating.

    Tahunanui has a range of cafes, restaurants and art and craft shops and galleries. A zoo and a model train/boat club (open Sunday afternoons) are great family diversions.

    Tahuna Beach also a go-kart track, bumper boat rides, a BMX track, tennis and petanque courts.

    Tahunanui is about 5 km south west of Nelson City, and easily reached on foot or using local bus and taxi services.

    The nearest airport, at Nelson, serves flights from Wellington and Christchurch.

    Mountain bikes can be hired at Nelson or Tahunanui for local transport.

    Tourist Activities around Tahunanui

    Tahuna beach is popular for swimming and sunbathing, as well as for sporting activities such as beach volleyball and kite-surfing.

    Along the shore, there are facilities for tennis, petanque and BMX-riding. There are also leisure activities including Go-karts, bumper boats, mini-golf and hydroslides.

    A small zoo provides good family entertainment. There is also a modellers’ club, open on Sunday afternoons and special days, which has modelling displays and provides rides on model trains and boats.

    “The Big Tahuna” is an annual musical, culture and sporting festival held before Christmas each year.

    Tahunanui’s art and craft shops and cafés/restaurants provide a pleasant shopping experience.
