  • Paraparaumu, on the west coast, about 50 km north of Wellington, is a destination popular for its beaches and exciting outdoor activities, such as hiking, hunting, and scenic tours by airplane, charter boat, or 4x4 off-road vehicle. The district also offers great golfing, diving and fishing opportunities.

    Paraparaumu airport is a recreational airfield that operatesscenic flights and a gliding school; the surrounding hills and prevailing winds offer some of the best gliding in New Zealand. Near to the airport is an aviation museum, and the town also boats a vintage car museum.

    Transport to and from “Paraparam” (as it is known by locals) is easy, by train or road. There is a good range of places to stay in this relaxing seaside retreat.

    Transport around Paraparaumu

    Regular coach services operate through Paraparaumu travelling south to Wellington or to destinations north.  The town is well-served by rail services, being located on the main line north-to-south. There is also a regular express rail service to the nearby town of Waikanae.

    Bus, shuttle and taxi can transport visitors to nearby destinations such as Raumati Beach, to the south, and Waikanae Estuary, to the north.

    Paraparaumu airport is serviced by charter flights.

    Tourist Activities around Paraparaumu

     There are many scenic reserves and gardens around Paraparaumu that can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, along with art and craft galleries, cafés and restaurants. Venturing outside the town, visitors can hike or mountain bike in flat or hilly country.

    Beyond the town centre are attractions such as museums and guided tours.

    Near to the sea, swimming, fishing, boating, snorkelling and scuba diving are enjoyed.

    Nature lovers might enjoy taking a scenic boat cruise to visit Kapiti Island, where many native birds not seen on the mainland are preserved in their natural environment.

    Harley Davidson motorcycle tours are a special attraction at Paraparaumu.
