More of Lye’s work can be seen at the nationally-renowned Govett Brewster Art Gallery and at the Puke Ariki Museum. This is one of New Zealand’s principal museums, especially noted for its exhibits of Maori history and culture.

In the heart of the city is one of New Zealand’s premier botanic gardens, Pukekura Park, established in 1938, a great place for walking, picnics and music concerts in summer.

The deep waters and predominant westerly wind of this exposed coast often cause large waves, making this region a celebrated surfing location. The deep water also presents an abundance of fish species that can be caught on charter fishing trips.

For familyfun times, there are several swimming pool facilities, include an aqua-park with hydro slides and a wave machine. Brookland Zoo is a small-animal zoo that hosts native birds, farm animals, meerkats, otters and monkeys.

The Taranaki region has about 20 golf courses, ranging from rural 9-hole courses, where sheep are to be found grazing on fairways, to premium 18-hole courses.

Stunning, snow-capped Mount Taranaki is known for its almost perfect conical shape. (It was a stand-in for Mt Fujiyama in the Hollywood film, The Last Samurai). A great way to appreciate it is from scenic flightsby helicopter or aeroplane. Air charters can also be taken for transport to other regions.

Mount Taranaki is enclosed by Egmont National Park, a native-forested area of 335 square kilometres that was protected in the year 1900. An area of ecological and historical significance, it is traversed by numerous walking trails, including a challenging summit walk that should not be attempted without proper equipment, and guidance that can be obtained from New Plymouth’s information centre Te Puke Ariki, or from regional offices of the Department of Conservation.
