    Holiday information on where to travel to in National Park Village

    National Park Village is about 40 minutes’ drive south from Turangi, or 90 minutes drive east from Whanganui. Traditionally, National Park has provided accommodationand ski resorts  for skiers. In modern times, mountain biking, river rafting, and kayaking have joined the range of nearby activities to be enjoyed.

    It is not far to travel from National Park Village are Mt Ruapehu skifields,ski resorts and walking tracks of Tongariro, or to towns along the rugged Whanganui River, from where rafting and kayaking tours depart.

    Accommodation in National Park (NZ)

    There is a very good range of accommodation available at National Park Village. Motel, hotel, bed & breakfast  ski resorts  and country lodge establishments provide food and accommodation, while backpacker lodges, holiday park and self-contained units provide for self-catering.


    Transport and holiday information around National Park

    A daily north-south train service, between Auckland and Wellington, stops at National Park. In addition, there is an intercity coach service six days per week, to destinations north and south.

    A rental vehicle or motor home is a good way to travel to National Park and surrounding areas. However, some unsealed roads within the park may not be suitable for such vehicles.

    Alternatively, a range of “mountain shuttle” transportation services can take visitors from National Park to the starts of walking and mountain bike trails, and collect them from their journey’s end.

    Mountain bikes, skis and snowboards are available for sale or hire at National Park.

    Tourist Activities and holiday information  around National Park

    Tongariro National Park is renowned for its alpine hiking trails and ski fields. National Park Village’s closest ski field is at Whakapapa, about 15 minutes’ drive towards the summit of Mount Ruapehu. Turoa ski field, on the southern slopes of the mountain, is about 30 minutes’ drive. Both ski fields offer ski hire, chair lifts, and restaurant hospitality.

    The Tongariro Crossing, a full-day hike across Mount Tongariro, is one of the most popular trails within the National Park. Guided treks along this and other famous walks depart from National Park year round.

    The Tongariro River, which flows north from the western side of Mount Tongariro, is a popular location for white-water rafting and kayaking. Guided adventure tours are available from National Park.

    The Whanganui River winds through rugged hills, south-eastward from the central plateau. Once an important trade route, it is now protected as part of a national park. Kayak, rafting and jet boat trips on the river offer a memorable wilderness experience, with much of historical interest to see along the way.

    As with mountain bike touring, quad-bike (ATV) tours allow visitors to experience scenic wilderness of the National Park. On poor-weather days, indoor rock climbing and paintball attractions at National Park provide more comfortableadventure experiences.

    Scenic flights operate daily, but may be constrained by poor weather.
