  • A centre of trade though its harbour and port led Napier to become a centre of administration for the former Hawke’s Bay Province. The town was virtually destroyed by a strong earthquake in 1931, and a new city was built, mainly in the art deco style of the time. It is unique as an example of such architecture.

    Napier has a warm climate and beaches suitable for water sports such as sailing and surfing. Fishing and diving charters, boat cruises and scenic flights are available.

    Napier has many of the attractions you would expect in any city, such as museums, Ocean Spa hot pools, zoos, galleries, theme parks and guided tours.

    The range of activities available includes balloon and helicopter flights, whitewater rafting, cycling trails, quad-bike (ATV) tours, and wildlife experiences.

    Napier is 20 minute drive sout-east from the inland city of Hastings.
