  • Mount Maunganui, 15 minutes’ drive south of Tauranga, is a large extinct volcanic island, joined to the mainland by a sand strip that holds a popular beach vacation town of the same name. With many accommodation options, shops and restaurants, and exciting things to do, Mt Maunganui deserves its reputation as a place for summer holiday fun.

A very popular activity is to walk to the summit of the mountain for great views and to watch the sports of hang-gliding and parasailing. The mountain was a stronghold of Maori people in early days. Guided tours are available to explain the history and geography of the area.
