  • Lumsden, in northern Southland, is situated in a wide basin valley between mountain ranges. It is almost equally distant from Queenstown, Te Anau and Invercargill (approx. one hour’s drive), making it a “gateway” to regions like Fiordland and The Catlins.

Early in New Zealand’s history, Lumsden was an important railway junction, where north-south and east-west lines crossed. The railway lines have since closed, and the old station has been transformed into a visitor information centre.

Lumsden lies beside the Oreti River, which is famous in New Zealand for offering some of the best fishing for brown trout, which reach giant proportions here.
