  • Lake Tarawera is one of the largest of the Rotorua lakes. It has several luxury lodges and many cottages and holiday homes to rent. It has a camping ground, accessible only by boat or ferry.

    The lake is surrounded by bush-clad hills that have short and long walking trails and tracks. The lake and the streams feeding it are renowned in NZ for their excellent trout fishing. Hot Water Beach is a popular camping and geothermal area accessed by boat, water taxi or by walking the Tarawera Trail

    Lake Tarawera achieved fame in the 1870s and early 1880s as a thermal wonder land. Waimangu. a geyser that shot up to steam up to 500 metres into the air, and the Pink and White Terraces, a spectacular silic formation formed by thermal springs, were viewed as wonders of the world. However, in 1886, Mount Tarawera erupted, and split in half. The lake rose by 12 metres, burying the terraces, and the Waimangu geyser ceased. A Maori village buried in ash is preserves a reminder of the disaster.

    Water-taxis, ferries, helicopters and float-planes use the broad lake and offer transportation or scenic flights. Ground-based tours often include cruises to sites of historical significance or geological interest.

    • Hot springs and natural thermal pools are found around Lake Tarawera. Take a water taxi to Hot Water Beach and dig your own thermal bath.
