  • Katikati, 10 minute’s drive north of Tauranga, along the harbour, is a great vacation destination for boating and swimming, fishing and bush walks. With plenty of accommodation options, thermal mineral pools and a golf course, it makes for an easy, relaxing holiday.

    Katikati was settled by Irish immigrants in 1875; the town retains some historical colonial buildings. It was voted NZ’s “most beautiful small town” in 2005. Katikati has also been nicknamed “mural town”, due a project to beautify its commercial buildings with artists’ murals, which started in the 1990s.

    Around Katikati are many points of interest to visit, including Ongare Point, Kauri Point, Tanners Point, Tuapiro Point, Anzac Bay and Shelly Bay. The harbour edge is great for bird watching. Occasionally, whales and dolphins can be seen from the shore.
