Coach tours to spectacular Cape Reinga, at the northern tip of the North Island are a very popular activity. These may divert to drive along the northern part of Ninety Mile Beach.

Activities based on 90 mile beach include sand-toboggan, land yacht, kite surfing, fishing, surfing and kayaking. Horse treks and 4WD safari tours are also available.

The east coast is also good for fishing and is suitable for diving and sailing. Boat charters and kayak hire are amongst options for exploring and, potentially, catching your dinner.

Scheduled coach and other transport options are available for travel to Cape Reinga and other Far North locations.

    90 Mile Beach

Ninety mile beach is closer to 90 Km in length. The name refers to horse travel in colonial times. It is exposed to the, usually rough, Tasman Sea between the North Island and Ausralia. A line of tall sand dunes separates forested inland areas from the sea. Fishing by surfcasting is regarded as the best in New Zealand, with the largest snapper being caught in this way.

Bus tours or 4WD rental allow exploring sections of the beach, or its whole length, and to camp and fish or surf. But great care is needed as the waves and currents can be dangerous.
