  • Featherston town is at the western edge of the Wairarapa region, close to the Rimutaka mountain ranges. It is close to Lake Wairarapa and Martinborough, famous for its vineyards. Featherston is on the main road and rail route connecting with Wellington and places to the north.

    The town has pubic gardens and a hillside domain for short walks. Shops and restaurants are of high quality, and include art & craft and antique shops.

    Featherston boasts a railway locomotive museum that holds the only Fell locomotive still existing. Other attractions in the town include a golf course and blues music club.

    The nearest airport is at Masterton, about 35 km north.

    Within Featherston, bus and taxi provide transportation. Alternatively, visitors can hire mountain bikes to explore their own routes.


    Tourist Activities around Featherston

    Featherston’s small size and relaxed atmosphere make it a great place for a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of cities and more tourism-centred destinations. Visitors can enjoy quiet walks through public gardens and parks, and can hike in the nearby mountains.

    A special attraction of the town is a railway locomotive museum, which has some unique and rare exhibits.

    Just a few kilometres south of Featherston is Lake Wairarapa - great for fishing, bird watching and shooting.

    As with most towns in New Zealand, Featherston has a golf club and 18-hole course.
