  • Christchurch and Canterbury have an Ocean to Alps backdrop - a spectacular coastline, snow-capped mountains and the hidden bays of an ancient volcanic peninsula. This region is one of the only places in the world where, within two hours of an international airport, you can ski at a world class alpine resort, play golf, bungy jump, go rafting, mountain bike, wind surf, whale watch and visit world-class vineyards and gardens.

The Christchurch/Canterbury regional highlights include NZ's highest peak, Aoraki Mount Cook, the seaside village of Akaroa, whale watching in the leading eco-tourism destination of Kaikoura, and hiking in Arthurs Pass National Park.

    Akaroa

Akaroa, with it's own beautiful bays and harbour, French and English history has an enormous range of activities to keep you busy for days. In Flea bay you will find the largest little penguin colony on mainland New Zealand. Akaroa waters are home to the rarest and smallest marine dolphin and all around you will find fantastic sea kayaking in spectacular surroundings. There are cruises, sail boats, cycle tours, mail runs, and an excellent range of walking tracks. Don't miss seeing the Hector's dolphins and other special wildlife on a harbour cruise. There is so much to see and do in Akaroa that you will need more than a day trip

    Christchurch

Christchurch is the largest city in the South island and the country's third-largest urban area. It lies one third of the way down the South Island's east coast, just north of Banks Peninsula. Bordered by hills and the Pacific Ocean, it is situated on the edge of the Canterbury Plains that stretch to the Southern Alps.

The Central City and some eastern suburbs have suffered earthquake damage but the city as a whole continues to operate and Christchurch is still a great place to visit. The city is currently being rebuilt and still operation. Christchurch offers many attractions for visitors such as beaches, markets, restaurants, shopping  and recreational parks.

The Alpine Pacific Triangle takes you to the gourmet area of Waipara, spa delights of Hanmer Springs and marine mammals of Kaikoura. Between destinations, enjoy the beautiful country scenery.

The Christchurch/Canterbury region boasts a spectacular array of accommodation. From the many motels, historic B&B's and holiday parks in Christchurch, to the more unique lodges and farmstays in the outskirts of the city and rural towns. Visitors to this region are spoilt for choice for activities which include authentic Maori experiences, white water rafting, wildlife tours, fishing, scenic flights and guided tours.
