  • Carterton, 50 km to the north-east of Wellington, across the Rimutaka mountain range that divides the lower North Island, is a pleasant country getaway destination with some unique attractions. Visitors can choose from many hosted accommodation options, from luxury hotel to farm-stay to holiday park, or can rent a holiday home.

    Carterton is surrounded by farmland and some vineyards. It is not far to travel to the Rimutaka mountains where there are easy and challenging bush walks and mountain bike trails.

    The town itself has many beautiful public gardens, public swimming pools, art & craft and souvenir shops, and a railway museum. Near the town is the astonishing “Aotearoa Stonehenge,” a unique structure built in the spirit of England’s original.

    Transport around Carterton

    Carterton is served by two rail stations on the Wairarapa line, linking the town directly to Wellington and also to Masterton a short distance north, where the nearest airport is located. Some national coach tour services stop at Carterton.

    Around the town, bus and taxi provide the most convenient transportation. It is also possible to hire a mountain bike for getting around. Mountain biking trails and tours within the district offer a great cycling experience – without too many hills!

     

    Tourist Activities around Carterton

    Carterton’s generally settled climate makes it a popular tourist activity in the Wairarapa region.

    Just outside Carterton is a unique attraction, New Zealand’s Stonehenge. It is not a replica of the English original but is a modern construction at a similar scale that, like the original, is aligned with transits of the sun and stars.

    Within the town, Carterton shops include antique and souvenir stores. There are many public gardens to visit, swimming pools, and excellent places to eat. Tours of nearby vineyards are also available from the town.

    Carterton has a number of mountain biking trails, and mountain bikes can be rented for use on them.
