Thing to do in Gisborne near Portside Hotel

Close to the main town are numerous famous beaches. Since Gisborne is one of the first places in the world to see the sunrise and both swells coming from the east and south, it is a surfer’s utopia. Waikanae Beach is located in the main town and perfect for beginner surfers. Wainui Beach is located just out of town and is popular for more advanced surfers.

Gisborne’s classic Pacific maritime climate is sheltered by hills and right on the ocean’s edge making it a perfect location for wineries. Visit the Gisborne Wine Centre, the one-stop place to head for wine tours, wine tastings and information on Gisborne’s many different vineyards.

The East Cape Lighthouse sits at the most eastern point of New Zealand, with stunning views, making it a must-do trip from the list of things to do in Gisborne. The lighthouse is a 173-km drive from Gisborne, from the small carpark the walk to the lighthouse itself only requires a short climb of 700 steps. Despite being situated a bit further away than other Gisborne attractions, the panoramic views and stunning scenery is well worth the trip.
